FSC is the only forest certification system governed by an open membership (General Assembly) where interests are equally balanced by economic, social and environmental chambers.

 
• Certifiers assess forest management using the FSC standards. Certifiers are independent of FSC and the companies they are auditing. This third party
verification is crucial to the integrity of the FSC system.
 
• Forest Management certification provides assurance that forests are being managed to the highest environmental and social standards.
 
• Chain-of-Custody certification provides assurance that products bearing the FSC label directly support responsible forest management.

UL certifies commercial and household toilet and facial tissue, napkins, and hand and kitchen towel products under its Sanitary Paper Standards for an overall reduced environmental impact.
 
These standards address recycled content and chlorine-free bleaching processes.
 
Standard criteria also includes “downstream” effects such as effluent content, air emissions, solid waste reduction, and energy consumption.
